I am often asked when working on a dot stipple piece, how did I do that. The simple answer is one dot at at time. I have taken pictures of the skull project to show how it builds up over time. The thing with dot stipple that people don't always understand is that beside putting the dots closer and farther a part to create value you must also dot to create cross contour lines to create depth and dimension especially for people and animals. Next up acrylic painting and portrait drawings.

I have begun my journey to creating. Sometimes when an artist creates the images have no symbolic meeting. It could be you just want to draw a bunny. Sometimes the research into an image holds deeper meaning. For my latest piece it includes a skull and flowers. I didn't want an image of just any skull but a skull of a woman. I took it a step further and researched skulls of Northern European women. I wanted the skull to reflect me and my DNA. Once I secured an image I could work from it was on to the next element, flowers. I decided on wild flowers. Not only did I need reference photos or images I took from my garden, I needed to make sure I drew then to the correct size. Yippee for the internet. Have you ever wondered how big a daisy is in comparison to your head. I now know. Now that all my reference materials were gathered I moved on to materials and size. I have decided on pen and ink with ink washes on hot press illustration board. I am going with a square illustration size of 15" x 15" I began the preliminary drawing today. I will execute the piece using a dot stipple technique. I estimate the project will take me 12 to 15 hours.
Have you ever wondered how an artist gets an idea or creates a image from a brief? What really goes on inside the minds of artist. I am going to take you on a journey from inspiration through research and planning to execution and final piece. The most amazing thing about having an artist brain is that inspiration strikes anywhere. I learned to write down a quick not or sketch to go back and visit again. Last weekend I was helping my husband with some paperwork. While that in itself can be inspiring it was not what spark my next idea. I decided to listen to music while I helped with the paperwork. A song came on and instantly I had an image in my head. In between assignments I started looking up images that I could reference for the image I kept seeing in my head. The next step is to do the preliminary drawings and research further for detail and select materials. I am leaning towards pen and ink with colored ink washes.
Stay tuned for the next installment. |
